#9: The Sacrifice of Noah (Michelangelo Sistine Chapel fresco)

#9: The Sacrifice of Noah.

This painting brings the tale of Noah to a close. Grateful for being saved from the flood, Noah makes a sacrifice to his God. Michelangelo’s fresco features a group of 8 figures gathered at the sacrificial alter, eagerly preparing the sacrificial animals or stoking the fire. While the “Drunkenness of Noah” symbolizes the incarnation of Christ and the “Great Flood” represents the baptism, the “Sacrifice of Noah” is the prefiguration, or forecast, of the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross.
